Subject: RE: Opinions on still using RR1 soybeans?

Planted around 65% RR1 last year. The yield was there, more about the right genetic than anything else. I had some phytothera hit me on a field, but that was my fault for being too aggressive in planting a bean with only 1 gene against it.

The key is a clean start. I have gone to working some corn stalks in the fall and again in the spring with a disk (your best tool against marestail- especially if it has much size) and posted with roundup at around v2 or v3. Had no trouble with weeds. I have a burndown program on some acres that costs a lot but is money well spent, has 4 or 5 modes of action and keeps things down pretty well. Get the post spray down early (roundup will kill a marestail with less than 2 collars around here) and let them grow.

FWIW I'm paying $24/unit untreated for soybeans. If I binned beans, carried them all winter, had them cleaned, and planted them it would be around $22 but it's enough hassle $2/unit isn't worth the trouble IMO.
