Northeast Missouri | Unfortunately, we've had too many *real* calves that are dead this time.
I've been moving hay feeding locations like crazy, rolling out lots of hay--have almost "paved" an entire hillside with hay--and wasting a lot of hay to give them some place to lay. But cold mud and rain every couple days always causes problems that are beyond helping. We had 2 calves laid on around hay piles two days ago--haven't had a calf laid on for years and years.
Had a newborn that drowned in the mud a couple days before that--the cow went back to an old bale ring feeding spot (far from where I'm feeding now) in a sea of mud to have him, and he got off of it into food-deep cow-tracked mud.
This has been the most difficult March for calving that we've had in 10+ years. *Everything* we do, we are doing in mud. | |
