Not ashes, but char....bio-char. You aren't suppose to burn the wood completely up. The pieces are still suppose to be porous to be able to absorb moisture and a living environment. You'll be able to notice more in a garden setting than you would in a field. Much smaller area to cover. I really don't know if it works or not. Watching youtube videos and making some, sure pass the time. I'm not saying it's a good use or a waste of your time, but it sure uses it up.
