I pull a 20' Eby with a 2500 GMC gas. Empty truck and trailer weigh 11,600# Can fit 8 fats @ 1400# easily for a total cargo weight of 11,200#. Whole rig loaded weights 22,800#. That's not including the weight of me and my sidekick. GVW of pickup is 9200# and trailer is 14,000# for a total of 23,200#. My point is you can fit a load on a 20' trailer, but not saying if you bought a 24' that you have to cram it full. Made the mistake of following GPS to an auction through hills of SE PA in the rain and fog a while back and found it was easier to pull it than than it was to comfortably stop it.
Your last statement - - - - one major reason to look for something heavier than a 3/4 ton gas pot.
There are other very reasonable to run options that have greater braking capabilities.
Can't always drive as fast as that 3/4 ton gas pot though and for many that's the deal breaker
(grin!
