Madison Co. Virginia | I've usually delayed a little longer than folks here. If I see a clean patch like your second pic, I'll breed her in 12 hours. If she was acting at all suspicious 12 hours prior, I'll breed her immediately.
If you're using sexed semen, you are supposed to wait a few hours longer than you would with conventional semen.
Even if you watch for visual heats, the patches are still very useful. For example, you see that group of three cows bulling in the far corner of the field. Two are clearly standing, but the third is so intent on jumping, that she never gives someone a chance to jump her. At least not while you're watching. It can be infuriating waiting for her to stand still long enough to let someone else try to mount her. With the patches, you can quickly see if she has allowed herself to be mounted. | |
