Subject: RE: N credit for unharvested Soybeans

Scottville, 49454 Northwest Michigan

There are some people who say there is no nitrogen credit to the previous soybean crop if the field as experienced heavy rain since harvest.

Some people will give no nitrogen credit to a previous soybean crop.  It's their opinion that we may be able to get by with less nitrogen on the next year's corn crop, but that's because there is very little residue left after a soybean crop, requiring nitrogen to be broken down.

Unless someone has experience with your situation, and is very confident in their opinion to share with you..... I would suggest running some nitrate tests.  If you're doing all your nitrogen application pre-planting or at planting time.... I would pull the nitrate tests a week beforehand.  If sidedressing.... I would run the nitrate tests a week before the sidedressing, and not bother doing the nitrate tests before any nitrogen apps prior to and/or during planting.
