Eastern Shore of MD | We are way ahead this year on gdu’s to the tune of 2 to 2 1/2 weeks ahead of normal and as a result our cover crops are taking off and accumulating biomass at a fast rate. Therein lies the dilemma.
Normally this time of year we are going after Marestail with Sharpen, MSO and one layer of our soybean residual chemistry. Last yr ran this and left out glyphosate but season was slower getting started. It worked out well as the MSO really stunted the cereal cover crop and kept it from getting too tall and I killed it at planting. That was my plan this year but now worried the excess cover crop growth this year will result in a not very uniform seed bed. Soil moisture is good and looks wet this coming week.
Attached pics of a field this year.
3 way mix - crimson clover, barley, and radishes (supposed to winter kill but not this year)
Plan is to spray, run turbo till to lay down old corn stalks and lightly prepare seed bed then plant in late April.
So my question is: gly in or out with our 1st spray pass? Other thoughts?
Edit to add. I would not mind keeping the clover alive till planting but I think Sharpen may kill it. I am more worried about letting the barley go too long.
TIA
