East of Broken Bow | Yes, get them together in a pen of some sort. There is a good chance if you put them in a small pen, and feed the heifer, the calf will nurse on its own if it isn't too run down. As long as the heifer is reasonably calm, this works fairly well as long as the heifer isn't kicking at the calf, and the calf wants to nurse.
If the calf hasn't nursed the heifer yet, you may need to catch her, and get the calf to nurse. Once he gets a good belly full, wait a few hours, then feed the heifer and if the calf wants to nurse, she will likely be distracted enough to let it.
The above is a best case scenario. What usually happens to me, is the heifer shows no interest in the calf, until the calf either dies, or gets transferred to another cow. Then, after a day or so, the heifer will be wanting to claim every calf in the herd. | |
