Subject: RE: Terminating Rye Cover Crop - NE Ohio

Pilot Grove, Missouri
What I have been told and my personal experience backs this up. It is best to have the rye either dead and brown or still green and growing when the corn is planted. The worst emergence I had with corn planted in rye was when the rye was sprayed a couple days ahead of the planter. The best was when I planted the corn and waited 5 days to burn down the rye. The theory is the alleopathy is the worst if the rye roots are dying just as the corn is sprouting. I have some rye I would like to spray soon, if the weather cooperates. If I don't get it sprayed in the next week, it is likely I will wait until after it is planted. Patrick
