Its not unusual for the cost of hog processing to be more than the value of the hog. If you have a bunch of sausages, bacon, and hams done then the cost can be triple the cost of the hog. We just had a couple beef done at two different processors. Both charged $100/animal for beef slaughter and about $0.62/# hanging weight for cutting/grinding and wrapping. I get it, processing equipment/rules/regulations are expensive and meat cutters want to make a living, too, because its hard work. They can physically do just so many animals a week. There's no such thing as cheap beef and pork anymore unless you buy it on the hoof. About 15 years ago a fellow we know sold a fat cow to a Vietnamese family. He asked them which locker plant should he take it to. They said could you bring it to our house on Sat? So he loaded it into his trailer and drove to their house. When a slew of people came out of the house carrying knives he wondered if it was such a good idea to be there. But they paid him for it and went ahead and processed it themselves. Guess its no different than a neighbor that gets together with his brothers and butcher's a few hogs and maybe a steer once a year.
