I think it depends on what you are feeding. If you're feeding mostly dry hay, then the extra time and fuel might not be worth it but you will save some hay that's wasted with bale feeders.
That^^, if your feeding $20 hay already it's going to be harder to make it work. If your feeding silage, and ddg's like the yankees do it will be easier.
