I think it depends on what you are feeding. If you're feeding mostly dry hay, then the extra time and fuel might not be worth it but you will save some hay that's wasted with bale feeders. Also you can feed hay that otherwise might not be palatable.
A vertical mixer allows me to feed a higher ratio of dry hay to silage than any other mixer wagon will handle.
