Subject: RE: Vertical mixer economics

Tablerock Ranch eastern Wa
Purchased a 900 cubic foot vertical mixer when we started feeding our calves to fat and it turned out to be the best thing for our cow calf herd imaginable ! we used to feed long hay kicked off the back of a flatbed pickup like is SOP on most western ranches, the effect of feeding corn silage mixed with the kitchen sink has had an enormous positive effect on our bottom line in regards to our winter feeding cost of the fall calving cow herd with big calves on them, we don't know if there will be any long term effects yet effecting longevity of a brood cow but I think it will prove more then worth it. It is not without its challenges as it requires a lot of space if you are just dumping on the ground during rainy muddy times. We are presently building 12 acre cow calf pens that act as late winter dry lots, these pens are on all weather roads for the mixer, and have concrete bunks with a forty foot 1' deep rock loafing apron that pairs can stay mud free while at the bunk, the pens also feature bunk space railed off from cows where their calves can bunk feed without cow competition , these pens also serve as breeding pastures where we can separate cows with preferred bulls. these lots are sized for 125 pair per lot---------hope it works as we are just building now and have hung 6 thousand feet of guardrail in the last couple weeks. To answer your Question I would say YES its worth it with the size operation you describe if you can buy one for the right price.
