I had an LG TV - 37". After about 10 years, the optical eye went bad.  I could not use the remote.  Otherwise, the TV still worked fine.  I finally got tired of getting up to change the channels, and I bought a new TV.  

It sounds like you might be in a similar situation - one small thing goes bad, and the TV doesn't work. 

For what it's worth, I think the picture on my 10-year LG TV was still better than the picture on my new LG TV.....
