That's a concept that I would never had thought of with my limited exposure to your type of ranching environment. Narrow may work with as dry as you are vs IL average rain fall per year. I still think wider would be better, because cattle do poop from the back side., so the accumulation, but 12 foot as dry as you are might be plenty.
