In my experience, corn works best the first year. My preference is kill it with shallow tillage and plant an oat/pea/brassica mix in late summer. Graze in late fall, then plant corn the following spring. Could also go to beans the first year out.

Kind of surprised to read this. What OM levels are you seeing in these fields? Do you think the pea cover crop is responsible for the N That produces the corn yield? Have you ever tried sod to corn without a N fixing cover?
