KY | Pardon my ignorance. I’ve driven by countless acres of cotton over the years, sat and watched some of the newer all-in-one picker/baler combos running in a field a couple years ago from across the road, but had never stepped foot in a cotton field. I was coming up through Ashland, Mississippi today and came upon two or three fields totaling maybe 150 acres that were left unpicked. It was drizzling rain so I didn’t venture out but I did pull into one entrance and walk to the edge and picked a boll out of curiosity. Here’s where my ignorance comes in, aside from death in the family or bankruptcy, what would be the reason for leaving it in the field? Once again, I know zero about it, but it was all standing, clean, didn’t see anything crazy to make me think disease or anything like that.
