The only real "straw" you can grow right now would be oats......and that wouldn't be such a bad deal if you wanted to seed it to something else as soon as you harvest the grain and straw. You might get enough growth on a sorghum sudangrass....to make balage in late October...but you can forget about it being harvested as hay...it will never dry for you. If you raise good high test weight oats (And that kind of depends on the weather you have) there is a market for them. You may be far enough north that they can compete with the Canadian oats that everyone likes to get with 40 lb test weights. If you plant them for seed.....you might be able to sell them for cover crop if you have a bin that will keep them in nice shape for you. You just need to get your ducks in a row and make a commitment to raising straw if you really want to bale your own.
