Pittsburg, Kansas | Hyder Alaska (the lower most portion of Alaska along the Canada coast) is a delightful little town to spend a few days in. We have been there a couple of times. There the park service has a national park that borders a stream where bears frequent during the salmon run. There is a big boardwalk that borders a length of the stream and is up above it to view the bears in relative safety. Park rangers are there at all times of viewing to watch out for things going wrong.
We were there too early the last time we went (before the salmon run) but did see a few black bears (one mother had 3 cubs) in the area. The first time we went the salmon run was late and few bears also but we did at least see one brown bear saunter up the creek.
It is a good place to spend a few days. A long bumpy road goes up the mountains where glaciers can be viewed also. Beautiful drive up through Canada to get there also.
If a person is up in that neck of the woods I recomend it. Only place in the US you can enter the US without going through a US customs. Have to go through Canadian customs when going back into Canada, but no US border station at Hyder.
