Kingston,Mi | My great-grandfather, Zoroster Fitzmoss Bearss, started as a cooks helper in a logging camp in the 1870's when he was 12 years old. They served bean soup made with MICHIGAN NAVY BEANS , flavored with ham hocks everyday all winter long to the cutters and teamsters in the woods. They transported a large kettle of bean soup plus buttered bread and hot coffee to the workers in forest by sled.
The navies were a cash crop that could be grown among the stumps and readily sold to the logging companies. My vote is with Pat, MICHIGAN Navy beans for either bean soup or baked beans. | |
