South Central MN | You can get yourself a simple dock that matches your brand of computer or ones with more connections. I use a caldigit TS3 plus. I pull 1 USB-c cord that connects the dock to the PC and I'm free from all the other stuff. This dock even charges the PC, so no worry about another power cord either.
Laptops have come so far in both price and capability and are so easy to hook to peripherals that there is very little reason to own a desktop anymore. I think the only reasons to get a desktop anymore are if you are doing seriously high-end computing or gaming or if you are very tight on desk space and want to put the thing on the floor or something. i suppose that a desktop that is equally spec'd to a laptop would cost considerably less than the laptop and additional monitor, so I guess that's a plus for the desktop. I do some engineering analysis on mine that is pretty intensive, and I still run a laptop. Really nice to be able to take it to the bank or just upstairs for a bit.
That being said, I hate using a laptop on my lap. They are just awkward to use.
