| What I have found really surprising is how quickly my desire for junk foods has subsided for the most part. I spent most of my life hardly eating junk food like sweets, chips, and soft drinks because I had a very active work life that usually extended into the late evenings. In recent years I am not as busy and it became easy to sit in an easy chair in the evening and snack on junk food. It became very hard to pass by the “junk food” cupboard. I knew it wasn’t good and I definitely noticed my health was declining but it was like an addiction.
Now, due to reading threads like this, I have been actively modifying my diet and have once again eliminated virtually all junk foods and now even most of the sugary and carbohydrate loaded types of meals, which I never had worried about before. What I am most surprised about is that now, after only a couple of months, I can walk right by the junk food cupboard and I don’t even feel the least bit of cravings. I would much rather eat a handful of nuts now than a bag of chips. I also don’t really miss the high carb meals either. The biggest issue I have with meals is they are usually the easiest type of meals to prepare as they include most of the conveniently packaged meals. I do find quick, lower carb alternatives a bit bit harder to find.
I am starting to think that a person craves the type of foods that he gets used to. If over time, we continuously choose junk food we start to crave it but if we continuously choose healthier alternatives instead our tastes change to suit and we start to crave these healthier foods. This is of course very early on. Maybe the novelty will wear off but I really don’t think it will unless I make a conscious effort to reintroduce junk food into my diet. | |
