Pittsburg, Kansas | A lot of truth to what you said but it is not as simple as calories in and calories out. Insulin (and glucagon) is the key to how our body deals with different class of nutrients.
In the beginning I probably increased calories and lost weight (with no additional exercise) . See Butter Bob Briggs butter makes your pants fall off. Now at ideal weight I have naturally reduced overall calories intake most likely (I don't count so don't know for sure), simply because I am not hungry like I used to always be (grellin controlled).

Hormones make a big difference.
You are right if we eat high carbs AND fat, the fat will go to body fat. But that is not as much the excess calories (might or might not be) as it is the hormonal switch that is thrown by the sensors in our intestines telling insulin to increase. When insulin levels are up, fat burning is shut down.
Insulin is the key. Carbs raise insulin. Someone insulin resistant has elevated levels of insulin all the time, locking out fat burning.
