Southwestern Minnesota | A person with diabetes in 1917 really had no other choice than to follow a low carb high fat diet as that was the only way diabetes could be managed. Insulin was not invented until the 1920's. Putting the body into a ketotic state was the only way to manage the disease and prolong life at the time.
And certainly there is a place for fruits, vegetables, whole grains and variety in our diets. Many deficiency diseases from years ago are no longer issues in this country because of these nutrients being included in our diets- (think scurvy, pellagra, rickets, etc) I'll choose variety and using good carbs for energy. | |
