Before I had it done, just about 2 years ago now I ask the same question. See the links below.
Hip pain was the main reason I sought help, but after a MRI I was told if I let it go much longer I could lose control of some bodily functions.
2 years post-surgery now and the fusion has held up well so far. The lost of range of motion in my lower back is the most noticeable lingering affect.
As I stated in the previous posts I think finding a neurosurgeon is a good idea.
