Subject: RE: Elevation Mapping

Since you have JD’s RTK system it depends if you have a GS2 or not. If you have the brown box you will need field doc, (in the GS2 it already comes with field doc) with field doc you can record elevation. But there is one issue; you need the latest update to properly record elevation (you may need to contact your JD dealer for help on this one, I am not sure it has been publicly released). Prior to the latest update field doc, elevation reading only changed if more than 4” or a certain degree of direction was detected (this was a software bug). This has been corrected in the newest update. Remember the elevation is recorded in meters so you will need to convert this reading to feet (3.280839895 feet in a meter).

(Side note: if you are using RTK with your yield monitor (and the lastest software as stated above) the elevation is recorded in the yield data string, so you can get an elevation maps from your yield data.)

Your other option is to add a secondary serial cable to your wiring harness and connect it to an ipaq (or other logging device) running a logging program (such as Farmworks sitemate scouting $500). This works very well (and this is the method I prefer). Again the data is logged as meters.

Several caveats;
• When logging to an external device make sure the GPS GGA string is turned on. This is necessary because this is the only data string that comes from the GPS receiver with elevation reading.
• You will need additional software to make you elevation collection valuable. Several examples are (I am sure there are more, but these are the ones I use)
1. MapCalc- http://www.farmgis.com
2. Surfer- http://www.goldensoftware.com
3. Ag Data- http://www.geektechforag.com/

Or you will need to take it to a third party to do additional processing (for a cost $$$).
