Subject: Be careful on the claims of reduction of events

Pittsburg, Kansas
A lot of sleight of hand goes on in the drug industry about how they report on the reduction of events.

Here is the way it goes.

Lets say in a thousand people there are 5 events (cardio or whatever you want to talk about). So 5 people in a thousand have it. Then in the trials they show that given the drug or treatment only 4 have the event. Presto! 20% reduction in events!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring on the TV commercials!!!!!!!!!!!! Sell it to the public!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let the drug reps go around and convince all the doctors to prescribe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you have to treat a thousand people with the drug or intervention to prevent one event. Whooptydoo.

The real reduction is .001.

(we will not even talk about potential side effectts in this post)

How many people would take the drug for that kind of one in a thousand chance?

Yet that is the way most drugs are promoted. Just dig into the study to see how many people were actually helped. If you really want an eye opener, dig into how many people are actually helped by taking statin drugs for cholesterol.
