Yes, stress is definitely important. In your case it helped. Unfortunately in the case of most it drives them to "comfort food" and makes losing weight harder.
Wife and I set out to lose weight. What really happened though is we got much healthier and in the process of getting healthy the weight came off. I say that, because a lot of the health issues I had were reversed before losing much weight.
It is still hard for me to believe I cheated knee replacement by a diet change, but that appears to be the case. Lifting and carrying heavy stuff no longer bothers me at all. I'm doing it daily up and down stairs carrying two dive tanks at a time.
Reducing inflamation in the body is the key.
