| We have lived in a barn/house for past 8 years and love it. It is exactly as we planned - we are in our 60's and it suits us perfectly. If we were a lot younger we probably would have kept it separate if we were doing heavy maintenance on machinery, etc. As is, we do light maintenance now and it works for us. The total building is 80x60 - living area is 30x60, shop 50x60. When we built, all of our expenses were deducted as farm as we first called it a shop and could deduct the driveway, electricity, etc. As far a cost, depending on your needs, interior, etc, you can have as much in the building as a standard dwelling. We have GEO heating and air in the living quarters and the shop radiant heat. We had a thermal protection under entire floor. which keeps the floor warm in both shop and living quarters. Our floors are decorative concrete in the living quarters. Due to the height of the building we are able to have a 2nd floor in the living quarters. Our living quarters is an inch higher than the shop level to allow for any spills, etc. in shop. We have no regrets in building, only a couple things we would have done different (design only)- . Overall very happy. | |
