North Dakota | This article explains a bit of archival storage. All of the current methods have their own pitfalls. Either the data becomes corrupt over time or you need some kind of maintenance schedule to keep the data fresh.
Depending on how large your collection is dual-layer Blu-ray is a fair choice. 50 gig on a dial layer disk. Discs are $5-7 each and an external writer is around $140. The discs are supposed to be good for 50 years if you get archival quality and they are stored in a cool dry place. I doubt they will be used 50 years from now and the data will need to be converted and stored on what ever is the current media at that time.
I keep my everyday photos on 3 hard drives that I keep one at home, one at work and one in a safety deposit box. I rotate the home and work one about once a month and I do a full backup once a year and swap with the one at the bank. My better photos I will store online as well as my media to try to make sure they are never lost.
