Fn +F5/6 are what change the screen brightness on my Lenovo Thinkpad. I use the instructions that Philbert linked to. Basically, go into Windows Settings, Devices, then Touchpad and turn it off.

I too have trouble with the touchpad. When typing, my wrists will cause grief.
