Subject: Ignition switch or starter gone bad

On our grain truck (86' Ford cargo 7000-401 diesel) the starter was acting like it had a dead spot. Yesterday when I finally got it started it almost seemed like maybe the key switch might be the problem. Truck started and had like a vibration sound coming from engine area. Then the truck suddenly quits and smoke is rolling up from fuel stut-off selenoid. Turn key off and still hear a hum from starter. Diconnect batt grounds and hum quits. So... Is there anything that can go wrong with starter that would short out and fry the fuel selenoid or is this all a switch problem.
