A .410 will work but is harder to hit with.  A big difference in the amount of shot in a .410 vs 12 ga.  A 20 ga semi would work nice.  Shooting like you did is some of the most fun.  Some people get too serious on a range.  It sounds like you were shooting pieces, primary shooter gets first shot and the others try to hit what he leaves.  I think that is some of the most fun shooting there is. 

 Sounds like you got the real basics down.  Most missed targets are from focusing on front site, lifting your head off the stock to watch the target or stopping the gun right after you pull the trigger.  Keep the face on the stock and watch the target until it breaks and pretty soon you won't miss.
