I vote for skipping the upgrade and converting old Microsoft OS machines to new Ubuntu Linux machines. Then install open office and anaconda on the new machine.That's a proven (and pleasant) escape from the Microsoft monopoly strangle hold.
Edit to add: you will then have an open system (free software that has no end-of life).
