Have several options. Are you going to read/write lots of files or just backup and not access very often. You have flash drives, HDD, SSD, cloud backup. are 3 of the main backups.

I am going through the same thing.

I use cloud backup right now because I have an android phone so google drive and windows 10, so Onedrive. There are others. I have a 2 TB HDD portable drive that records video from my TV antenna. Been going several years.

If you are coping a lot of data as a backup, then you need a fast usb such as 3.0 at the minimun if not thunderbolt 3 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.1 gen 2. I think thunderbolt 3 is the fast at this moment.

How much do you want to spend but also ask how reliable you want the backup drive. You might do a combination of cloud backup, flash drive and SSD.
