SE IL | My daughter has one kidney that is 1/3 the size of the other, and has virtually no function. It was caused by reflux, which she had from birth until the surgery at around 8yrs old. She did well up until around a year ago (she's 16 now), when she started developing symptoms of reflux again (almost constant UTI, pain on sides, etc.). We've been in and out of Dr.'s offices, specialists, and hospital stays since then - but it's not reflux. The good kidney is still good, the other isn't causing any problems - so.... Biggest problems are the elevated liver enzymes and UTI/kidney infections that just keep happening or never stop.
Anyway, got a little off track there - sorry.
As far as one kidney is concerned, no isn't really a big deal. But you probably should keep a sharper eye on yourself/child than normal, especially with a female. Females tend to have more UTI, and if untreated that can cause a kidney infection. If you have only one kidney, that's a very bad deal....
(BTW, that's reflux of the ureatheral tubes, not like esophogial reflux.)
