I do not believe that it released or unhooked the team from the plow.

It just absorbed the shock. Pic enclosed illustrates how I think that it worked. The Red and Green connections are 90 degrees apart inside the spring. They should not be touching each other at any time for proper operation.

Wait and see if someone can tell us if I have it right.

I also think that addtional pieces with adjustment are in there to put some tension on the connection hooks to keep the spring under a slight amount of tension to eliminate any loose sloopiness of the red/green connection bars.

Best that i can do at this early time in the morning.
