They often use 2 ports to get enough power. That can be a problem with the newer laptops that only have one older USB port, or only 2 and you need one for something else. If you use a multi port expander, you need a powered one to supply the power of 2 ports.
The newest style of USB port, the C, is a better option if your laptop supports it. It supplies much more power per port and faster speeds. But, it is a newish deal, so won’t work with older equipment.
