The premise of the movie was that what I grow is "crap". They think that I am responsible for making americans obese because food prices have been too cheap due to subsidies. They want to go back to a subsistance form of agriculture and have farmers live like the amish. Apparently, the only subsidies that are bad are the ones that you are not getting - the film makers were quite happy to take a government subsidy from PBS to make the movie. Sorry, those kids came from privilege and are Michael Pollen followers that don't know what a hard day's work is all about. The sad thing is, that is the only picture of agriculture that some will see. Yes, it angered me.
So, what if there is a lot of merit to it. Does it do any good to get mad about it? If you are truly growing crap, you're doing it because you have to do it to survive as a farmer, not because you personally decided that you're going to deliver low food value to the entire population to get rich - but because the system is pushing you into doing it. What choice do you have?
It makes no sense to get angry about it, though, unless they are personally insulting you and saying that you caused the mess. |
