| Original poster is in hilly northeast Iowa. I am in south central Iowa. To not use a nurse crop in these regions is often an invitation to disaster, We have used annual ryegrass the last two years. It makes a lot better hay than oats. If we hadn't used it this year, the erosion would have been catastrophic. Even then, if the big rain hadn't held off until May, the ryegrass wouldn't have helped much. I agree that nurse crops hurt the alfalfa., but the risk is usually too great. I'd give my right arm to have to have Carlson's flat fields to clear seed. | |
