I think there was research several years ago that proved that not only should nurse crops be avoided, but that herbicide was also not cost effective. Just take the weed flush with the first cutting.

Maybe that was pre-RR alfalfa. I have no good herbicide options I know of since I want grass in my mix.


Depends on what your chasing. I usually am dealing with volunteer canola as my biggest weed issue. I use 400ml/ac bromoxynil. Only $6/ac. Safe on grasses.
