Not unheard of in a farm setting. Pour it thicker and skip the rebar. Often, like you say, the concrete is just making a long-used and well-graveled space a little more convenient. Thus, it's very well compacted over the years already. A few cracks and even some lateral shifting isn't the end of the world.
