Madison Co. Virginia | I don't think I've ever replaced a safety rope. I just reuse it each time I pull a pump. I knot it off at the tang on the pump, and tie it around the pitless adapter. Some wells have an extra adapter below the pitless adapter, that allows you to tie the rope to a small eyelet. This conveniently keeps it out of the way when trying to seat the pitless adapter.
I suspect the rope is more of a carry-over from the galvanized pipe days, but I figure if it's there, it's not any more trouble to just reuse it.
The rope in each of our wells is poly, so I don't see how it would ever rot.
Somebody above mentioned using pvc pipe instead of black poly pipe. Unless your pvc pipe is a lot more flexible than what I'm familiar with, don't use it. If you tried to bend pvc into a 6 foot radius(necessary for pulling a pump), I'm pretty sure it would shatter. | |
