You have to let the pipe set and cure if it's been used for a few years on a rack in 100° Texas sun. The paint will stick right to it then. So technically we bake it.
Sorry - - - - forgot you have an over sized baking oven (grin!).
Grew up in that oilfield country of the north and we didn't have that oversized oven.
Pipe that was pulled from a sour gas well, or a high salt water crude well - - - - well let's just say that welding that even with 7018 was fairly challenging.
Like the steel had absorbed some of the junk from in the well (sulfur and salt water salts for 2).
If it wouldn't weld then it was probably magnetized from being down hole. I've run into that on a few occasions. Not super common around here luckily. Most of our old wells are super high saltwater percent so the normal issue is finding splits and holes after you've welded them in...
