Jefferson, SD | +10 just across the border in western IA. Having a + is an anomaly for anything around here. Excellent yields in this neck of the woods last year but I get enough calls from ethanol plants to know they are struggling to keep the hammer mills from running empty today.
In my particular area there is very little growing corn remaining. The sandy soils have good looking corn, the loams and clays either didn't get planted or were adjusted by crop insurance and replanted to beans. We can't seem to dry out yet and the corn not destroyed or that was replanted is yellow and going backward as are the replant beans in those soils. In my back yard I'm estimating 30% of the corn acres vs normal. It's a much bigger deal than is realized. NW IA is corn deficit on a normal year so I look for basis to get a lot stronger as we go. | |
