| Harvey, you have a more modern Oliver than I've seen. I've only seen high-wheel models, mostly on steel. IIRC, the patent date on the gearboxes is 1937.
Dad taught me a couple things to tend to before attempting to move the drill after it has set a long time. Always drain the gearboxes and put fresh oil in them. Any good engine oil, auto trans, or trans/hydraulic fluid will do. Also take a wrench and move the square distributor drive shaft on each side to make certain it turns freely.
The gear cases are a natural water collector by design. I've been known to fill gear cases to where they flow oil out the shift rails before parking for the winter. | |
