Subject: RE: Waterway grass

Floyd County, Iowa
First, thanks for answering my question.

When the waterway is choked with tall grass, it impedes the water movement. Ours does not have a lot of fall in the 3/4 mile length of it. If the water can't get through the grass waterway fast enough, it will back up and run out through the fields, taking dirt with it. So, mowing it is kinda necessary, not recreational.

Normally it's dry, but when we get a sudden downpour or extended rainy period, water will flow through it, about 1/2 to 3/4 full for a day or two. Also, we have to drive across this to get to the portion of the field on the other side. If it's got that tall grass in it, it doesn't dry the bed, and when we cross we tear up the bed and leave ruts.

Not sure if everyone has the same definition of a waterway. Here, ours is about 60 feet wide, gently rounded bottom, and about 2 to 3 feet deep at the center, and totally sodded with grass. It's not a ditch.

Again, thanks.

edit to add: This waterway starts at our fence, at the road ditch. The road has 2 large culverts under it, and the 1/2 section beyond drains surface water through those culverts and down the waterway, to the drainage ditch that runs through us.
