Subject: Waterway grass

Floyd County, Iowa
I have about 2.5 acres of waterway that I give the grass away, just to get it gone. I need the waterway to take water if we get a real turd floater rain.

The guy I gave it to has someone different mowing and baling it for him this year. It (the ground) was wet earlier, so he couldn't get in when he baled some of the other ones around.
When it was dry (2 weeks ago), I called him. He said there was a good chance for rain, and would get it when the rain quits. Seems like there's always a chance for rain, but hit and miss. Been lucky that nothing heavy has showed up, just a 2/10ths and 8/10ths.

The grass is about 4 or 5 feet tall now. What is the quality of the grass for feed when it's this tall? If it's going down hill, quality wise, I may just hook up the bat wing and chop it down, but hate to waste it or have it built up and kill the grass under it.
But if the quality is still OK, I'll try a little pressure on him. Another farmer told me "You can't put it up until you lay it down".

If it gets cut, then rained on, how much does that affect the quality?
I'm not a hay guy, in case you hadn't already guessed.

Thinking next year I'll just mow it from the start and forget the baling thing.
