| I put in about 1500ft of 10" and 8" with the excavator this spring. I have an Apache laser receiver that shows both level and plumb. I always pull the stick back until it registers plum from the same direction to maintain extra consistency and then level it off. I get the bottom close and then plumb and lower the stick to level and drive back to level off the bottom of the trench in about 5' increments adjusting the depth to level as I go. I have a dual grade laser, so I can preset whatever grade I want. For 8" and under we use a V instead of a spoon. Perferated tile is a lot easier since it does not float as easy. Usually a guy standing on the perf can keep it down as it is backfilled. For the nonperf we had to use the mini excavator to hold it down as we backfilled to keep it from floating up. Part of our challenge was that we had to start the line below the creek level to get enough cover at the bottom end. Fortunately we were able to raise up fairly quickly and get back above the water level, but there was still a lot of new ground water coming the trench as we dug. Ours was fairly easy other than the mud since we did not have to go over 5'. | |
