The common pink-flowered thistle is easily controlled by timely mowing. Once the stalk has some height to it, if you cut it off it's not coming back and setting seed. I don't think the seed lasts more than a year, so 1 or 2 years of cutting every pre-flowering thistle should eliminate the problem.

Of course, easier said than done.
